My car went for a very very long time without an oil change and even though it has had one its knocking?

It is a 2003 pontiac sunfire. As I said the oil has been changed but it is knocking really really LOUD. My son in law says it doesnt sound like a rod knocking but maybe the oil pump is shot. My Questions are where is the oil pump located, could this be the reason for the noise and could the engine totally be ruined if it is the oil pump, and about how much do you think it would cost to fix? How do I find out without spending a lot of cash. Also,

I'm scared to drive it anywhere. My car went for a very very long time without an oil change and even though it has had one its knocking? The oil pump is in the oil pan , It has to be oil pan removed to change, About the loud knocking try to pinpoint it and see if its really the oil pump, hope this helpsMy car went for a very very long time without an oil change and even though it has had one its knocking? If your oil pump is shot it only takes a few miles to ruin your engine. Never heard of an oil pump knock.Any service station should just walk out and listen to it for free, but if you have a knock it's gonna cost big bucks i'm afraid. My car went for a very very long time without an oil change and even though it has had one its knocking?I would have the car towed to a reputable repair facility and have it checked out thouroughly. Sorry, but there is no excuse for not having the oil changed regularly!! This may be a very costly lesson in vehicle maintenance. My car went for a very very long time without an oil change and even though it has had one its knocking?First, was it knocking before the oil change. If it was, changing the oil won't help it. Hard to say what your exact problem is, but oil pump alone doesn't cause knocking. Once lack of oil pressure causes furher damage, THAT'S what causes the knocking. Driving it at all will do nothing but cause further damage. At this point, there is no correct solution besides tearing the engine down.

BTW, the oil pump is located in the oil pan under the engine which on that car is a pretty big job in itself. My car went for a very very long time without an oil change and even though it has had one its knocking? If the car went too long without an oil change changing the oil all of the sudden probably killed it. running old oil sludge and other stuff gets built up in the motor. When you finally change it the new oil breaks all this stuff off (like its supposed to) but there is so much that it will clog the inlet screen of the oil pump. Then its just like running it without oil. If you are getting a loud knock its most likely a rod and it doesn't have long to live.

I worked for a company that went 50k without changing the oil in one of their delivery trucks, when if finally got changed the truck lasted 2 days before it lost oil pressure and started knocking. My car went for a very very long time without an oil change and even though it has had one its knocking? You need to take it to a shop right now. if the pump is bad the engine well blow-up soon. if it is not the pump it might be the lifter, u can tell if the noise is at the top of the engine. if that is the case ask another question on here on how to fix that and i well tell u.My car went for a very very long time without an oil change and even though it has had one its knocking? The oil pump is in the crank case, Pumps are about $100. an up, but it's the labor that will cost alot. depending where you take it. but don't take it to a car dealership, they charge 3 to 4 times more than any mechanic. It doesn't sound like an oil pump, they seldom fail. Did you check the oil level on the dip stick, they have not put enough oil in the car?? It must be to the full line. The wrong grade of oil, can cause a knock.

Take it to a shop that does only engines, a lot cheaper. Before spending any money, have a mechanic check it first.
